Celebrating Excellence in Forestry

Ernslaw One is proud to be working with some of the best in the industry following the recently announced winners of the Southern North Island (SNI) Forestry Awards.

Moutere Logging who has been working with Ernslaw for 13years picked up the Contractor of the year award by its Moutere 2 crew which is a fully mechanised ground-based crew working in Karioi Forest.

Dale Ewers, owner of Moutere Logging, says he and his team are ecstatic about the win.  “We’ve got an awesome team on the ground in SNI and this award is great acknowledgement of their continually outstanding performance. But we couldn’t do this without Ernslaw - working with good people who share common values such as zero harm, innovation and strong team work makes for a great partnership,” says Dale.

Ernslaw One Regional Manager for SNI, Steve Couper, says the Moutere 2 crew win was well deserved. “The crew, who have been working with us in Karioi Forest for 10 years has consistently maintained a high level of health and safety management and its log production and quality is always up there.   With their ‘can do attitude’ they’re a great team to work with,” says Steve.

Moutere Logging also works with Ernslaw in its Titoki and Te Namu Forests in SNI.

The Forestry family of the year award was won by the McCarthy’s of McCarthy Transport who has been working with Ernslaw for three generations.  Starting out with four trucks between Mark senior and his sons, they now run 134 trucks and employ over 200 people.

Managing director, Mark McCarthy, says he and his boys were thrilled and humbled with the award.  “Getting such recognition for just doing what we do was wonderful.  It has been very gratifying to see the boys take an interest in the business, working in it as kids.  They have taken on the same love for the industry that I have always had and they are now making the business their own.”

Both companies have grown together over the past 30-plus years, sharing similar values and helping each other succeed.

Steve Couper says McCarthy’s provide cartage services from Ernslaw’s SNI forests to domestic mills, railheads and ports.  They also operate a transfer yard for Ernslaw’s Titoki Forest to enable harvesting operations to continue un impeded when log supplies build up and distribution channels slow. “ McCarthy’s are an innovative contractor who run a very modern fleet and are always looking for ways to improve H&S outcomes.”

Managing director, Mark McCarthy, says Ernslaw has been a great business partner to have.  “They really appreciate what we do as a team and have supported the growth of our company and our people over the years.”

Ernslaw sponsored the SNI Forestry Awards Silviculture Excellence Award which was won by KTM contracting.
