How we work

Environmental Management

Environmental Management

The forestry industry plays an important role in our environment. Planted forests deliver clean drinkable water, are habitat for many rare or threatened indigenous species, reduce soil erosion, provide renewable, energy-efficient building products, offset carbon emissions and are a major part of the rural economy. We harvest a renewable resource in an environmentally responsible manner through good forest management and taking a low-impact approach. Caring for the environment goes hand in hand with our forestry operations. We regularly review our operational procedures to ensure they measure up against best practice in environmental standards.

We work closely with our contractors to protect the future productivity of the land, not just tree health but also soil and water health and biodiversity. We are committed to continual improvement and strive to not only meet industry requirements but exceed them.

Carbon sequestration

Trees absorb carbon dioxide while they are growing, actively removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in the form of wood.  This natural process is so efficient that approximately half the dry weight of a tree is carbon. And that carbon remains stored in the wood, and the wood products that they become, for many years.

Radiata pine sequesters carbon at a rate at least double – maybe three to four times – the average NZ native forest.

Growing both radiata pine and Douglas-fir puts us in a unique position to manage the carbon liability from harvesting the forests. Radiata pine is clear-felled from 25 years onwards, whereas Douglas-fir is from 45 years. This means that when we are harvesting the radiata pine, the Douglas-fir will still be growing and will cover any carbon liability that may occur. Similarly, when the Douglas-fir is being harvested, the radiata pine will be growing. We can therefore manage our forests for timber production, as well as ensuring that no liability arises for any carbon that is sold from the forest.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Planting, Pruning & Thinning

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
