Timely pruning and thinning of the company's Radiata pine and Douglas fir plantations improves the quality and quantity of wood produced. Modern technology, in the form of specially developed forestry software and growth models, is used to assist Ernslaw One's highly qualified forest managers to analyse the optimal combination of pruning and thinning for a given site. On the best sites, trees are pruned to produce clearwood at harvest, thus improving the return from the most productive land.
Ernslaw One’s annual harvest is in excess of 1,000,000 cubic metres per year. This volume of harvest, combined with some challenging topography, requires some 30 harvesting crews, with more than 20 of these crews using cable logging harvesting techniques. Each of Ernslaw One’s forests poses specific harvesting challenges which require specific solutions. Ernslaw One is committed to high-tech, low-impact harvesting techniques and strives to manage all aspects of the operation to avoid lasting impacts on the environment.

The rationale to diversify and add value has seen Ernslaw One expand processing capabilities into a full vertically integrated softwood product company via the purchase and integration of wood processing entities such as Winstone Pulp International Ltd. These facilities have all been integrated under the WPI brand and form the processing arm of Ernslaw's forestry activities.
More recently Ernslaw One has looked towards more efficient utilisation of its forestry by-products and is promoting the benefits of sustainable wood products in the energy industry through its residue supply relationship with Wood Energy NZ.
Ernslaw One is committed to the promotion and maintenance of healthy and safe working conditions and practices, and will do all that is practicable to prevent personal injury and damage to property.
Ernslaw One employs some 45 staff and over 400 contractors nationally. As much of Ernslaw One's forests are located in isolated areas, the local communities provide a large part of the workforce, and Ernslaw One has a contributing effect on the economics of the local community.
