Fit For The Road programme

The fit for the road programme has come to an end for log truck drivers throughout the Gisborne region.

Twenty four drivers from the region participated in the 3 month programme which is funded by the Log Transport Safety Council and ACC.  The programme is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of truck drivers via education and motivation to improve their nutrition, physical activity and work/life balance.  Programme coordinator Michelle Kedian of MAK Health and Safety Ltd said “the programme had some successes with drivers losing weight, participating in physical activity more regularly and even smoking cessation”.

To finish the programme the drivers were challenged to a 5km fun run/walk on the water front on Saturday 28th May.  The event was very successful with participants putting in a big effort on the day.  The support of local forest manager Ernslaw One and trucking companies Williams and Wilshire & Pacific Haulage also contributed to the success of the day.  Kedian adds, “it is great to see that forest owners and company managers are supporting truck drivers to make lifestyle changes”.  The programme is now off to the Tokoroa region.
